Big news/rumor on the Designated Player front for D.C. United this morning is that the Black-and-Red are set to sign Ukrainian international and former Chelsea and A.C. Milan striker Andriy Shevchenko.  Football journalist Ashley Gray (@AshleyGray) posted on Twitter this morning:

"I hear Andriy Shevchenko has agreed to join DC United in the MLS. Nothing official yet, though."

The story has garnered some attention from Steve Davis of ProsSoccerTalk as well: European correspondent: Shevchenko moving to D.C. United. Only time will tell if this is meerly another transfer window rumor of a former European star coming to MLS or a good lead.

Do you think United would be smart to add Shevchenko? Does the former Milan striker (127 goals/226 apprearances) fill a current need for United? Which current D.C. United DP would you trade for the ability to sign Shevchenko?

I am very afraid to answer who I (as DCU) would trade for Schevy's services considering they really don't need him (DCU tied for the most goals scored in MLS) and Branko's contract is amlost up. If they got rid of him it would be a horrible mistake.

I agree that letting Branko would be a tough decission but his past injury history and lack of production combined with the cost of carrying multiple DP's for D.C. seems too much right now given the financial contsraints at RFK.
